Wes Lunsford - Am I Flying?

Wes Lunsford is a Nashville studio musician with deep roots in American music, a knack for improvising and a fascination with spontaneous composition. As a teen he played in rock and heavy metal bands, but was soon captivated by R&B and jazz, which in turn led him to avant-garde and experimental projects. He may be the only Nashville sideman who discovered country music while touring in China (in a jazz ensemble), and that further influenced his own writing and playing, as well as his choice to relocate to Music City. He currently writes and performs with his duo, The Young Fables, while also doing TV, film and studio sessions.

Through it all, Wes never let go of his passion for improvisation, which is the focus of his first solo album, ‘Bedtime Music.’ In making it, he challenged himself to record a freeform piece at the end of each waking day, with no constraints at all – the songs could be abstract, melodic, atonal, rhythmic or out of time. “Am I Flying” is a beautiful example.

As Wes puts it, “My goal with any improvisation is to have a direct line from the heart to the guitar.”
