about

Jim Matus is a composer, band leader, arranger, guitarist, vocalist, teacher and studio engineer specializing in progressive world fusion, jazz, rock and improvisational music. He's also inventor of the laoutar, a unique mandocello/Greek lute hybrid, for which he has composed and performed a growing repertoire of solo and duo pieces. He's collaborated with many musicians, including Don Cherry, Hassan Hakmoun, Percy Jones, Veiux Farka Toure, Grace Kelly, Soft machine’s Hugh Hopper, and Shane Shanahan of the Silk Road Project, among others. His 2001 release ISHQ, with Paranoise, was up for a Grammy nomination in the World Fusion category. Jim is based in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts.

He recorded this freely improvised track on his laoutar, a custom-built electric instrument designed to have a powerful acoustic sound.

Jim:

"The way I record it is to split the direct output from the pickup to stereo tracks with different compression and EQ to get a wider sound, and combine that with stereo mics to capture the string/pick sound. I use an oud pick, which is long and thin and allows for a much more percussive sound. That's the type of pick used by Greek laouto players."
