Guitarist, composer and improviser Asier Pérez Basterra, a.k.a. A. Maiah, has many sides. With strong ties to the vibrant music scene of his Basque Country home, his musical story is continually evolving.

Asier has been part of the post-punk and noise-rock bands Exhale, Erizo, Nitxos and Viva Bazooka. He’s been part of the improv ensemble Eraeran and has collaborated with musicians from the Basque improvised music scene. He composed an original soundtrack for the documentary film “Durangas” by Rakel Calvo. He’s performed in Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, the UK and the Czech Republic.

In 2015 Asier began to develop a body of solo work that has ranged from experimentation with noise, to twilight guitar compositions to free improvisation with prepared guitar, and electro-acoustic music with sampled field recordings.

“Sleepwalking Downtown” is from a unique album called ‘Improvisations on Prepared Acoustic Guitar.’ Recorded over a two-day period, these abstract pieces evoked a quote from Ursula Le Guin: “"Like all walls it was ambiguous, two-faced. What was inside it and what was outside it depended upon which side of it you were on."
