Dave Draper has been pushing the boundaries of the guitar through experimentation since the early 1970s. With few role models at the time, he developed prepared guitar techniques and adapted electronic processors in creating unique soundscapes. Influenced by 1960s-era free jazz, experimental music and progressive rock as well as an extended journey through Africa, he later formed bands such as Ivory Coasters and Invisible String Quartet and has toured Europe, while refining his sound design and improvisation methods over the years. He's participated in over 30 recordings and soundtracks.
"Solar Wind," believe it or not, is an improvised guitar solo.
Says Dave:
"I used Mobius for a long time, and controlled it with a Softstep foot MIDI controller. Hated their software so built my own using Plogue Bidule. Then built a one-shot sampler/looper in Bidule too, which grew into a speed-bending, loop-chopping device, triggered by random choices from sets of values for pitch ratio (all just-intonation, simple ratios) and loop division. The choice of scales/sets of divisions is set, but which actual values from the sets are chosen, is random. So I end up with a kind of pseudo-random instant composition generator, all originating from a single guitar. Oh, and there's a ring modulator option in there too. Still with me?"
Not exactly, but it's a beautiful track regardless.
